If anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him. Upon the banner of every religion will soon be written: Help and not Fight; Assimilation and not Destruction; Harmony and Peace and not Dissensixon. Sectarianism, bigotry and fanaticism have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have drenched the earth with human blood, and destroyed civilizations. Had it not been these horrible demons, human society would have been far more advanced than it is now. Man is to become divine. Idols or temples or churches or books are only the supports; on and on the must progress. The religion of the future must embrace all that exists in the world and is good and great, and have infinite scope for future development. The doors must be kept open for future additions to the already existing store. The Advaitic system from its start is non-destructive. This is another glory, the boldness to preach. Do not disturb the faith of any, even of those who have attached themselves to lower forms of worship. This philosophy preaches a God who is the sum total. If you seek a universal religion which can apply to every one, it must always be the sum total and include all degrees of religious development.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Romain Rolland
Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature two years after Rabindrarnath Tagore did – in 1915 – for his already famous novel Jean Christophe. A musician and a pacifist, he was much attracted by Vivekananda’s Advaita and ideas of a World Religion, and, disturbed by the First World War, he decided to learn more and write about not only him but also his Master. He also wrote the life-stories of Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi. For a while he worked with the Red Cross to serve the suffering. His literary writings set new Red Cross to serve the suffering. His literary writings set new trends in world literature. Romain Rolland’s reputation as an idealist and free-thinkers made him welcome all over the world.
