The Industrial Revolution of the 18th century changed the complexion of the European Society in Many ways. The exploitation of man by man increased. There were certain classes which were holding the means of production in their hands. So naturally the competition in Society increased and those who were powerful economically were able to exploit the poor masses. Innocent people were working as Serfs in Agricultural fields and coal-mines. Since there was no planning and the Governments were mostly in favour of the rich, the poor people only suffered. Life for them was a living hell and their efforts were frustrated, by the Government machinery. All these factors have been very minutely described by Thomas Hardy in his Novels and other essays and short stories. This book is an Indian version of the criticism of the literature, life and works of Thomas Hardy. Hardy maintained that the vision of a maligned God must persist in a world beset by evil and misfortune.
