ABOUT THE AUTHOR Saiyid Nurul Hasan

Born in 1922, Professor Saiyid Nurul Hassan was educated at Allahabad and Oxford. He served as Professor and Head of Department of History at the Aligarh Muslim University from 1957 and as the Director of Centre of Advanced Study in History at the same place from 1968. He taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and at the All Souls College, Oxford. Professor Hasan is a former Secretary of the Indian History Congress, and has been elected its General President for the 1973 session. Later on he served as the Vice-President of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was the Indian Ambassador to the USSR. At present he is the Governor of West Bengal.
