The Centre for Science & Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries had organised an international workshop on "Tissue Culture of Economic Plants' during April 1994. This was in persuance to the directive of the governing council of the centre as an activity under biotechnology identified as an area of priority. The workshop was held at National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune which has developed a strong plant tissue culture group with its research and application-oriented programme directed towards development & productivity in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Commonwealth Science Council (CSC) and the Third World of the workshop was to bring out a publication on Tissue Culture of Economic Plants & its techniques including gene transfer technology. In consultation with Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, Director-General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and the then Director of National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), the centre commissioned this publication with Dr. A.F. Mascarenhas, Dr. C.K. John & Dr. Rajani S. Nadgauda as its authors, who are all internationally reputed experts in the subject.
