Situated in the Indian Himalayan region, the Uttarakhand state of India continues to remain one of the most underdeveloped states of the country. Most of the people depend upon agriculture for their livelihood and employment. Making use of a variety of secondary data as well as first hand information gathered through field survey in select areas, the present study attempts to examine the extent and nature of options available for diversification of farming system, so as to create additional productive employment for the marginal farming community of the Uttarakhand state. The present status and structure of farming and animal husbandry in the state, has also been identified and discussed in the book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR G S Mehta

Dr. G.S. Mehta (b. 1954) is Fellow in the Giri Institute of Development Studies, Lucknow. Earlier, he had worked with the Department of Economics, University of Bombay, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, Kathmandu, Nepal. He has been engaged in research in the areas of development economics, rural development, human settlement, Gender Issues, economics of mountain areas for nearly twenty-eight years. He has completed two dozen research projects and published fifty-five articles in various reputed journals. His other published books include, Data Documentation on the Economy of U.P. (1987), Education, Employment and Earnings (1990), Socio-economic Aspects of Migration (1992), Uttarakhand: Prospects of Development (1996), Development Planning and Options in Uttarakhand (1997), Developomente of Uttarakhand: Issues and Perspections (1999).
