The book presents various facets of British India or Colonial times and the struggles of Mahatma Gandhi which eventually led to the Independence of India in 1947. There is a focus on communal politics and the affairs of the Princely States. The making of an administrative framework. social evils like suttee and the carving out of foreign policy of India which is discussed in vivid details. Another facet is the migration of Indians to all parts of the world and the role of Indian soldiers in the First and Second World Wars. Punjab played an important role in the freedom movement and especially the Jalianwala Tragedy which shook the conscience of the entire world is also presented. The centenary celebrations of Maharaja Ranjit Singh also coincided with the time of preparing this work, hence his role is highlighted. A book which will be of great interest to scholars, teachers and policy makers in particular.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S K Pachauri
Dr. Surendra Kumar Pachauri belongs to the Indian Administrative service of the 1968 Batch and Andhra Pradesh Cadre. He has a brilliant career and held many important positions in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India. He did his B.A. (Hon's) History and M.A. History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University. He is LLB from Delhi University and Ph.D. in Public Administration (Osmania University Hyderabad), He held the post of Secretary Culture, Commissioner Archives, Commissioner Archeology and Director, Oriental Manuscripts Records and in the State of Andhra Pradesh. He is a prolific writer and had many publications to his credit both in India and abroad. he is a life member of the Indian History Congress and an active permanent member of the World Archaeological Congress. His latest work Entitled "Impact of Environmental Law in Industry" was Released at the World Book Fair New Delhi From 2006.
