Tribal peoples constitute roughly 6 per cent of the India’s total population. Officially recognized by the Indian Government as “Scheduled tribes†they are often grouped together with scheduled castes in the category “Scheduled castes and Triblesâ€, which is eligible for certain affirmative action measures. There are around 636 schedule tribe categories in India. They are situated all over India. Even though they have a rich culture they are socio-economically disadvantaged and marginalised. Most tribes are concentrated in heavily forested areas that combine inaccessibility with limited political or economic significance. Historically, the economy of most tribes was subsistence agriculture or hunting and gathering. This book discusses status of tribal life in India in terms of their demography, health, education and employment. It tracks down the social status of tribals, their ethnicity and racial conflicts, alienation of tribal land and many other issues that are marginalizing them. This work will be a highly valuable reference tool for social workers, policy makers, researchers, students and general readers.
