Universal Elementary Education has always been a priority for the Indian Government, and although it has been unable to achieve this goal in the 60 odd years since independence, the efforts to reach it have always been maintained. It is with this aim of reaching out to every strata of society with education that the Government of India has started the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). This book looks at the efforts and strategies adopted by the Indian Government to achieve its goal of universal and free elementary education for all, and through this, the goal of meeting 100 per cent literacy rate in the country. It discusses the role SSA Projects to play in the next few years, and offers various perspectives on its functioning, achievements and failures. The need for universal elementary education has been discussed at length, and the book focuses on the governments’ other educational policies too.
