This book is a study of urban centers of Pondicherry in various periods of history. Starting from the first historical period of South India continues with other dynastical period’s viz ancient, medieval and modern ages. The study deals with the identification of Urban centers viz., Arikamedu to Sangam age, Bahur to Pallava period, Tribhuvani with Chola times, Villiyanur with the Vijaya Nagar dynasty and ends with the French modern Pondicherry. A hypothesis is framed after studying the various factors or promoters of urbanization.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S. Chandni Bi

Dr. S. Chandni Bi is working as Lecturer in the Dept of History, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India. To her credit she has published three books and several papers. Her papers on ‘Medieval South Indian History’, particularly on ‘Medieval Cholas’ are well received by the scholars of South Indian History. Her resent article on ‘Saba under the Imperial Cholas in South India’, published in Tamiliyal Araycci (Vol.IV, 2003) is note worthy one. Her interest and commitment to the socio-educational advancement of weaker section of India resulted in the ‘Biography of Sir Syed Ahamad Khan’ in Tamil, latest publication of the Sir Syed Acadamy, AMU, Aligarh. 2004.
