Cities play a major role in economic growth of the country, employment generation and nation building. To achieve these goals the urban areas must have access to good infrastructure, adequate finance system and effective administrative and management system. The problems of urban sector in India in general and in Rajasthan in particular have been highlighted, the efforts being made in the sector have been described and the urgent need for institutional and financial sector reforms has been emphasized. Among the contributors figure eminent academicians and practitioners in the field of Urban development. This book will prove to be a useful resource for all those interested in urban administration as also for students and faculty pursuing urban studies and for trainees, trainers and training institutions. It would also serve as a helpful initiator for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the discipline.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K.K. Bhatnagar

K.K. Bhatnagar retired from Indian Administrative service in the year 1996. He has held several assignments including Chairman and Managing Director, HUDCO; Member Secretary, National Capital Region Planning Board, Ministry of urban Development, GOI; Commissioner, Jaipur development Authority etc. He was Chairman sub-group on Urban Infrastructure –India Infrastructure report 1995-96. He prepared the statutory national Capital Region Plan for Planning and Development of Infrastructure as its Member Secretary. Since 1996 he has been working as a Consultant, Urban Development, Municipal Management and Urban Infrastructure, Institutional and regulatory aspects and capacity building. Prominent assignments include institutional expert, J&K Urban development Project and MP Urban development Project-both funded by Asian Development Bank and Community development and capacity Building Specialist, Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Project sponsored by Asian Development Bank.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K.K. Gadeock

K.K. Gadeock is a member of Rajasthan Accounts service at present working as professor in the Urban Sector at HCM RIPA, Jaipur. He worked for three years as Financial Advisor. Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure development Project and also had a short stint as Institutional pevelopment Specialist in the Urban sector in an AusAid funded project at Gangtok, Sikkim. He has also worked as Dy. Secretary (12th Finance Commission) and Dy. Secretary (Economic Affairs), Government of Rajasthan.
