Since the 1950s, the imposition of Chinese socialism has brought pronounced changes in the urban morphology of Lhasa. These changes are reflected in both expansion of the urban area and especially the transformation of its internal structure. This study assesses the geographic, political and demographic factors at play in the remarking of Lhasa from the beginning of the 20th century. The study will contribute significantly to the literature on cities in socialist countries.
