In the recent past, attempts have been made to study process of urbanization and the consequential changes in social and economic profiles by conducting socio-economic surveys of towns and cities of India. Unfortunately there has been no such attempt so far as the towns of Assam are concerned. This book is an attempt towards filling up this gap with a study of Sibsagar town. It is primarily based on sampled surveys covering different aspects of the socio-economic life of Sibsagar town. The author has gone into a detailed study of the rate of growth of urbanization and the contributing factors such as demographic dynamics, growth and distribution of income, pattern of consumption, occupational structure, structure of industries as well as the cultural and educational aspects of the growing urbanization in Sibsagar town. By arranging this data in a suitable manner and by the application of appropriate statistical technique, he has tried to deduce the significant trends in the urban economy of Sibsagar and their concomitant problems. The analysis should provide a basis for the future planning and development of the urban economy of Sibsagar. The author on the basis of his study has drawn the conclusion that there has been no planning so far in the process of urbanization of Sibsagar, and this should prove as an eye-opener to the policy makers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Manirul Huda

Dr. Manirul Huda (b. 1946) obtained his Master’s degree in Economics in 1967 from the Gauhati University and subsequently served as an Investigator in the Economic Survey of Transport Needs of Lower Brahmaputra Valley, conducted by Department of Economics and sponsored by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. He joined Sibsagar College in 1969 as a Lecturer in Economics and has been serving in that capacity for the last eighteen years. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in Economics in 1979 by the Dibrugarh University. He has published several resear5ch papers on various economic and social problems, including problems of emerging urbanization in Assam, in standard economic journals both in English and Assamese.
