Iron pyrites is a mineral containing both iron and sulphur alongwith some micronutrients. Huge reserves of pyrites have been unearthed in various parts of the world. Pyrites has shown its potential as a multipurpose soil amendment, an acidifier, plant nutrient modifier and a cofertiliser to supply sulphur and iron to plants. The use of pyrites as an amendment, a recent development in the chemical amelioration of alkali soil, has opened fresh avenues in the reclamation of alkali soils. The book is a critical evaluation of the present knowledge on the oxidation of pyrites and factors affecting pyrites oxidation in soil, mechanisms of alkali amelioration through pyrites, pyrites use technology, agronomic management of alkali soils for improving the reclamative efficiency of pyrites, role of pyrites in improving the solubility of native and rock-phosphate P, besides use of pyrites as sulphur and iron carrier.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR L L Somani
Dr. L L Somani (b. 1945) did his graduation and Ph.D. from the University of Udaipur, Udaipur. He had all through a brilliant academic career and also holds Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism. He was awarded Post-Doctoral Commonwealth Fellowship (1975-77) to undertake research at Waite Agricultural Research Institute, Adelaide (Australia). He has also served the Gujarat Agricultural University. He is currently working as Professor at S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner. He has been honoured by the 'Dhiru Morarji Memorial Award' (1984) for agricultural Science by the Fertilizer Association of India. He has published over 200 papers and articles in national and international journals of repute. He is associated with several academic societies. Besides being the editor, compiler of monumental Dictionary of Agricultural and Allied Sciences Series, Dr. Somani has published many other outstanding books.
