This book is a compilation of papers presented and deliberated upon at the National Workshop on ‘Environmental Issues’ organized by the Department of Applied Research, Gandhigram Rural University. This workshop was a part of the project on ‘Safe Environment’ sponsored by Science and Society Division of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi. Most of the papers throw light on environmental problems and issues with a view to formulating multipronged environmental strategies towards regenerating safe environment. ABOUT THE AUTHOR M. Alankara Masilamani

Dr. M. Alankara Masillamani is a lecturer in Rural Development at Visva Bharti, Santiniketan, West Bengal. He has a doctoral degree in the field of Energy Economics. He worked as a Research Assistant in the DST Project on ‘Safe Environment-Replicable Sullage Disposal system for Rural Settlements’ at Gandhigram Rural University and has over 7 years of teaching and research experience. He has also served in NGOs and private sectors. He has published a number of research articles in reputed Indian journals and has presented papers in national seminars and conferences.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR M.A. Sudhir

Dr. M.A. Sudhir is Professor of Applied Research at Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram. He has over 22 years of postgraduate teaching an research experience. A specialist in higher education reforms, rural development research and environmental studies, he served on the Faculty of Education of North Eastern Hill University and Arunachal University before joining Gandhigram. He has published a number of research articles in leading national Interdisciplinary Journal of Extension and Research. He recently published books on ‘Ageing in Rural India: Problems and Prospects and Empowerment of Rural Women Labour Force.
