Astangasangraha is an encyclopedic compendium of all the eight specialized branches of Ayurveda. Vagbhata, son of Simhagupta and grandson of Vagbhata, who flourished in 7 century A.D. is considered to have composed this authoritative text on science of medicine of ancient India. This text is divided into six sections namely sustrasthana, sarirasthana, nidanasthana, chikitsasthana, kalpasthana and uttarasthana. The present book is the English translation of Sustrasthana of Astangasangraha consisting of 40 chapters. It is the text with special importance to Kayachikitsa. The 40 chapters of Sutrasthana have mainly dealt with the following topics such as desire for longevity, initiation of pupil, regimen to be flowed everyday and also during the seasons. Some of the chapters detail much about the prevention of diseases, knowledge about foods and its incompatibility. Descriptions of various drugs, classification of therapies particularly of Panchakarma are dealt in detail. The last chapters throw much emphasis on the knowledge of surgical instruments, the methods of surgical treatment, and using of leaches, venesection and applying of kshara and agni karma. For the convenience of the students a list of all the important topics are included in the appendix. English translation of this text is presented in simple form for better student comprehension, and also much care has been taken not to distort with the original meaning of the Sanskrit version.
