Vanity, Vitality, and Virility will give you the answers to all these questions, and many more besides, as renowned science communicator John Emsley lifts the lid on the secrets behind the products we use. From sunscreen lotions and disposable nappies, to whispering asphalt and even chewing gum, Emsley shows how many of the things we take for granted in our lives are products of the chemical industry. He explains the many and unexpected ways in which they improve our lives and argues that the widespread belief that ‘natural’ chemicals are safe and ‘man-made’ chemicals are dangerous is little more than an urban myth. While this book will not advise you what to do if you want to improve your looks, your health, your peace of mind or your six life, it explains the science behind many of the products that claim to be able to do just that.
