Pudovkin’s Film Technique was first published in English in 1929 and republished in 1933. Film Acting was published in 1935 and reprinted in 1937. Since then the key works of this seminal figures in cinema history have not been available to the English-speaking reader. This volume of new translations of his most important writings from 1926 to 1952 enable us to trace the development of Pudovkin’s ideas through his career. Yevgeni Filipov’s translations are from the Russian edition of Pudovkin’s works, published in the 1970s. The authenticity of the original texts and the quality of the translations and annotations are therefore of the highest scholarly standard. This book will fill in important gap in the literature on Soviet cinema and will re-establish Pudovkin’s claim to a place in the canon. None of these essays have been available in English for more than half a century.
