Since time immemorial, water is most pertinent natural resource not only for biotic and abiotic activities but it is also significant for the human survival. It is a fact that life on the earth began in water which is widely distributed substance on the mother ‘Earth. It is unique in nature and is present all parts of the world in different forms. Water plays a key role in various developmental activities i.e. economic, social, biological, chemical, physical and religious. Although, water is abundant in nature but fresh water is limited and its reserves account for only 2.53 per cent on the globe. Since the last few decades, several parts of India are already facing the serious problem of water scarcity and it is depleting very fast. The current existing scenario of water resources poses disastrous picture and it has been predicted that 21 century war will be fought on water. Therefore, the ‘Water Resource Management’ has emerged as the most dominant and core issue facing the global community today. Hence, keeping in mind its great relevance, there is an urgent need to control the depletion of water levels and to improve the quality of drinking water for the better management of water resources. Apart from the said important reasons to compile and edit this book contains several erudite research papers. Another most partinent logic and reason to bring out this book is that the year 2003 has been declared as "International Year of Fresh Water" by the U.N.O. Hence, in the light of the year of fresh water-2003, it is the great responsibility of the international scientific community to bring more and more awareness among the masses in order to conserve and manage our most valuable water resources. So, the present book entitled "Water Resource Management" is indeed important and timely. The present volume consists of 33 research papers which are purely based on various problems and major issues of water in the contemporary society. Another aim of bringing out the book is to introduce more and more latest techniques and technological methods especially rain water harvesting through the various research based articles in order to recharge ground water levels in various regions of the country where the situation is deteriorating day by day. A number of techniques including modern and traditional have also been suggested and highlighted in the current book to improve the quality and potentiality of our existing water resources.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR G.S. Chauhan

Dr. G.S. Chauhan, born at V.P.O. Bass, T. Hansi, District Hisar (Haryana) on 8th April, 1966, served as a lecturer at Govt. College, Jatauli Haily Mandi (Gurgaon); before joining at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar College, University of Delhi. After obtaining his graduation from University college, M.D. University, Rohtak, he did his M.Sc., M.Phil (Geography) from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra and Ph.D. from University of Delhi. Dr Chauhan has contributed more than a dozen of research papers in the national and international conference in India and abroad. He has also visited Tokyo (Japan) and Seoul (South Korea) to participate in the conference of International Geographical Union (IGU). He has also been actively associated with two prestigious projects, namely “Management of Land Resources of Northern India” sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India and “Mountain environments in India and Canada” sponsored by Canadian International Development agency. He has been elected twice as a representative of North India in the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) held at New Delhi and Hyderabad. He is an active and a dedicated researcher and his major fields of specialization are Desert land use Studies, Deseretification, Disasters, Management and Tourism Geography.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R N Dubey

Dr. R.N. Dubey has completed his graduation and post graduation from B.H.U. and the Doctoral Degree from G.B. Pant Social Science Institute Allahabad as an ICSSR Doctoral Fellow. He has worked in a prestigious research Project titled India: A Resource Atlas sponsored by CSIR. He has also been active with the SCERT, Delhi and the IGNOU to provide study materials, training and councelling. He has published several papers in reputed Journals, Books and Newspapers. He is the author of the book namely 'Population, Environment and Regional Planning'. His area of Interest is in population, environment and resource management. At present he is teaching in the Deptt. of Geography, B.R. Ambedkar College, University of Delhi, Delhi.
