Since 1996, Government of India has issued guidelines for the implementation of area development programme adopting watershed approach. In the light of experience gained in implementing these programmes the guideline is revised by the government in 2001 and the latest one is Hariyali, 2003. Watershed approach aims at restoration of ecological balance, preserving environment and stabilizing income of the village community both farmers and the assetless and landless agricultural labourers. ABOUT THE AUTHOR N.D. Mani

N.D. Mani, a well-known academician and researcher in the field of Watershed Development and geoinformatics is heading the Department of Rural Development in Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed University), Gandhigram. He took M.Sc. degree in Geography in 1979, and Ph.D. in 1994. He teaches Geoinformatics, Digital Cartography, and Information Technology at the Post Graduate level. He has already published a book on Perceptional Cartography and District Planning. He has successfully completed a number of research projects funded by State and Central Governments like National Informatics Centre, University Grants commission, New Delhi, etc. He has been conducting workshops on Application of Geographic Information System to the student community from neigbhouring Universities. He is an expert member in the District Watershed Advisory Committee in Dindigul and Karur Districts. He has executed a number of studies in monitoring and evaluation of Watershed Development Projects. He has visited Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka upon academic invitation. He is a life member in professional bodies like Indian Geographical Society and Indian National Cartography Association.
