These are the stories that have inspired generation after generation of children who grow up to pass them onto their own children. For thousand of years, story telling in India assumed the form of sruti (hearing) and smriti (memorizing). Every evening, children fathered round the knees of grandparents to hear stories of yore, stories which made them round-eyed with wonder and stories which knit the values of Indian society into the fabric of their lives. The stories changed colors and shades depending on the teller, but a continuous theme ran through all of them . . That it may take time but sooner or later good triumphs over evil.
