Bharati Mukherjee, Attia Hosain and Githa Hariharan represent the radical change that took over Indian English novel towards the last quarter of the twentieth century. Their woman-centred novels, articulate the rich and complex experiences of the middle-class Indian woman that had been deliberately rendered mote by a society essentially guided by male perception. Theirs is the first effort to break through the hard centuries-old crust of a decadent system that has lost all its relevance and power in modernizing India. Te present book is the result of a serious and pointed research in the work of the three novelists. It seeks to present the restive spirit that presides over the writing about and by Indian women. Expression of that spirit after centuries of marginalized, mute and brutalized existence makes a highly refreshing reading, enlightening and deeply inspiring for generations of writers to come.
