The neglect of women in the development process and the immediate need for appropriate attention on women to enable them to attain their requisite position in the society has been emphasized. Realizing the need Government of India initiated exclusive development programmes for women with active association of State Government. Government of Andhra Pradesh is one state in the country which stands as a pioneering state in terms of SHG movement based on micro credit. The state witnessed gigantic strides in terms of women empowerment through micro credit. However, research studies penetrating into the aspects of process, impact and efficacy aspects are always essential to understand the process of SHG movement in a much better manner and suggest requisite measures to pay a better way for realizing the potential and benefits of SHG movement. This is in view, the present study was taken up. The study analyses the issues pertaining to the very formation process of sustainability of SHGs among women. In the process various psycho, social and economic issues were probed. The study also encompasses on in-depth understanding of social and economic factors influencing SHG movement… The analytical perspectives of the study in this regard pave the way for diagnosing the prevailing social and economic aspects of women. The book is presented under five chapters namely introduction, review of related literature, methodology, analysis and summary and conclusions. The book will be of immense help to policy planners, designers and government and non-government agencies concerned with the well being and empowerment of women. The recent visit of Sri Rahul Gandhi to observe the functioning of self help groups serves has a guiding force to uplift the status of women in different endeavours.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K. Baby Sarojani

Dr. (Smt.) K. Baby Sarojani had her master degree in philosophy and psychology, M.Phil and Ph.D. in Adult and Continuing Education from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. She has two decades of experience in organizing women welfare activities and social activist since students days. She has been updating her skills by attending training programmes in Adult Education, Women, rural and tribal development programmes. Her research interest mainly women empowerment. She attended several national and regional seminars and published five papers. At present she is founder of a voluntary organization and working for upliftment of troubled people. Dr. K. Baby Sarojani has been associated with many affirmative groups working for women welfare in costal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
