Women, Family and Social Problems in India

Women in India are worshipped as Devi, Mother-Goddess in cannate. In ancient times women’s position in society was above everyone in the family. During middle ages their position fell and they were deprived from the benefits of education. Even during that period some notable women like Raziya, Nur Jahan, Durga Bai, Mira Bai and Jijabai were always present. During the British period, due to reform movements launched by Annie Besant, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Dayananda, Ramabai, Ranade, Vivekananda and others the Indian women came to the forefront of society. But it was Gandhiji who got women involved in freedom struggle in a big way. This book studies in detail the problems of Indian women in life, in family and in society. It is a short book but covers the three periods viz. ancient, medieval and modern. Women’s role as a home maker, society builder, cultural upholder and nation builder has been high-lighted. It is hoped that the book will prove useful to all those who are interested in gender studies and social problems of India.
