The present publication is an interdisciplinary research work, falling within the scope of ‘gender studies’ and ‘sociology of higher education’. This volume, based on primary field data, critically looks into the views of young educated girls regarding various social alliances as they encounter them in their day-to-day social relationship network. The book examines the perception of young women at the graduate and post-graduate levels towards four major social institutions, namely marriage, family, education and employment as reflected and projected in their responses in a formal setting. The work unfolds a critical reflection on the present perceptions of the young-adult educated girls looking forward for their career and family lives. While working out the analytical details, the research assignment constantly keeps in focus the economic, cultural and power dimensions as present in the larger social milieu. Possible changes in the power and status dimensions of Indian women in the coming decades as they are perceived and projected. Based on the critical analysis of the data inside of the composite socio-cultural scenario, suggestions for betterment of their animated status are presented.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR H.S. Krupalini

H.S. Krupalini, Ph.D. (Kuvempu), Lecturer, Bapuji College of Nursing, Shimoga, holds her Doctoral Degree in Gender Studies and Sociology of Educationi under the guidancae of Dr. Vighnesh N. Bhat, co-author of his book. She has published in the area of women and development, and lectured extensively on various topics of sociological interest. Dr. Krupalini is associated with several organisations and voluntary agencies besides working in research projects related to tribal and community studies in the Malnad area of Karnataka.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vighnesh N. Bhat

Vighnesh N. Bhat, Ph.d. (Pittsburgh), is currently working as Professor and Chairman, Department of Sociology at Kuvempu University, Karnataka. Professionally trained in psychology, sociology, and media studies in Indian and North American universities, Dr. Bhat has published extensively in refereed journals – national and international. Author of four books and director of major research projects, Vighnesh Bhat was associated with several social science committees and expert groups of Karnataka and Central Governments. He has guided a number of research students, visited many countries, conducted specialized courses in communicative and managerial skills, lectured extensively in India and abroad, and is acting as consultant to a few major industrial groups in India.
