ABOUT THE AUTHOR Samita Manna

Dr. (Mrs) Samita Manna has been associated with research and teaching for over twenty years. She stood first in her MA examination. She got her Ph.D., (1986) and D.Litt., (1996), in Sociology from the University of Kalyani, West Bengal. Her working career started from 1979, at in the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, and since 1980, she has been engaged in teaching in the Department of Sociology, University of Kalyani. She has carried out research work on different problems of urban and rural societies with particular emphasis on tribal problems. Some of her excellent studies also have revealed a new dimension in the field of gender problems. Her studies are based on extensive field-work in various parts of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. She has visited countries like Switzerland (1988), Italy (1990), Canada (1998), Bangaladesh, (1998), etc.
