Taking into consideration plays, poetry and fiction, the book explores the feminist trends in Indian English writings by delving into the writings of Shobha De, Kamala Markandaya, Githa Hariharan, Anita Nair and others. It views the fiction by women and on women in the contemporary literary scene. It examines the literature on marginalisation of women in society, discussing the depiction of women that brings out their protests and concerns. It deals with marginality and oppression in The God of Small Things, the institution of marriage in Ships that Pass by Shashi Deshpande, the quest for identity in the short stories of Temsula Ao, and women in patriarchal society as explored by Kamala Das.
