The study of anatomical, physiological and psychological aspects of human beings in their working environment is important to ensure that the work fits job to the man rather than the man to the job. In a semi-industrialized country like India, the working class is one of the weakest sections of society. Society being male-dominated, women workers receive Still poor recognition/ value. It is not that there are no statutory provisions to ensure fair working conditions for women in India. In fact, the constitution of India provides equal rights and opportunities to both the genders. In addition, there are specific provisions for protection and welfare to working women in many of the labour laws. However, most of these legislations do not cover agriculture and units in small and informal sectors which are the predominant workplaces of women.

Women today are not only doing physical work but are also doing mental work by taking up employment in the jobs like administration, management, offices and courts. With the growing avenues, women facing various types of problems, which need to be sorted out and solved. This book deals with the problems and issues of working women and is lined with the efforts made towards employment of women. This book also deals with working condition of women in India. It examines in detail the activities and work methods of women workers. Professional women who have attempted to work with their potential capabilities and resources have entered the world of occupation and have made carrier rapidly in this era. Hence, this study will focus on some of the factors that are responsible for producing either physical or mental stress which could have adversely affected the health status status of working women.

The Department of Extension and Communication is dealing with various issues related to women and great efforts in identifying and exploring various aspects related to the problems of working women. The department also focuses on many projects and activities, thus, contributing in raising the status of women in society. Therefore, under rural and extension programmes of the department the study will provide a platform to initiate welfare programmes for employed women. Thus, adding to the knowledge, information and modifications for the development of the above courses.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dhara Thakkar

Dhara Thakkar, she secure her B.Sc., M.Sc. degree from the faculty of Family and Community Sciences, The M.S. University of  Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat. She has been involved in research and extension and writing reports of the projects. She has attended many conferences and seminars. Her areas of interest are Development communication and women studies.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rameshwari Pandya

Dr. Rameshwari Pandya did her B.Sc. and B.Ed. from Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi and secured her M.Sc., M.ed. and Ph.D. degrees from the Mahaeaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat. She is the recipient of Shrinati Leela Ben Shah Gold Medal for her academic excellence. She is a senior faulty member in the Faculty of Family and Community Sciences at the Maharaja Sayajiro Univeristy of Baroda. She is in-charge of Pragati, the urban extension wing of the Faculty. She is a member of the Board of Studies, the Senate, and Syndicate of the University. Dr. Panday has published 10 books and 100 research papers in professional journals of repute. She has successfully completed several projects including one major project titled Promotion of Communal Harmony funded by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. She has attended and organized a number of workshops, seminars, conferences and short-term courses at the state, national and international levels.
