The book is concerned with the WTO’s GATS agreement with particular reference to higher education. Reviewing the literature on globalisation of higher education, it presents a historical perspective of higher education in India including the education system in ancient times, the medieval period, and in colonial and independent India. It views the growth of the higher education sector in India and its present status. It provides a summary of the commitment made by WTO members on the education sector and analyses the implications of the articles of GATS for the Indian higher education sector. Giving a range of data and analysing the trends over the years, it studies aspects like cross-border supply, consumption abroad, foreign students’ inflow and Indian students’ outflow in higher education. It discusses aspects like financial sources for availing of higher education, countries popular for higher education services and the pattern of overseas students in India.
