The legends of India recapture the history of the Indian peoples, for they are based or actual persons, places and things. Unlike myths, with their function of prescribing behaviour within the social order, legends merely describe secular history--even though the divine and super natural may figure in them. At the same time they embody the passion and the charm, as well as the generosity of the inventive India imagination.
