This volume is an outcome of selected papers presented at the Eleventh conference of the National Academy of Psychology held in December, 2000. Taken together, the papers in this volume reflect the pluralistic identity of current reflect the pluralistic identity of current psychological research in India, marked by diverse ideological perspectives and methodological preferences. Some of them are critical of dominant trends in the discipline, others, emphasizing on cultural contextualization, have presented alternative ways of conceptualizing and doing research. ABOUT THE AUTHOR U. Vindhya

U. Vindhya is presently Associate Professor and Head, Department of Psychology and Parapsychology, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, Although she had obtained her Ph.D. in Parapsychology, she subsequently shifted to gender issues due to ideological concerns. Her research interests include domestics violence, mental health of women, and the psychology of political activism. She has completed a major research project sponsored by the ICSSR on Domestic Violence in Andhra Pradesh and is currently engaged in a project on the Socio-Demography of Mental Illness. She has published over 40 research papers in national and international journals and edited volumes. She was the recipient of the South Asian Visiting Scholarship at Oxford University, U.K. and Visiting Lecturership at Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary. She was the Managing Editor of Journal of Indian Psychology from its inception for nearly ten years.
