This is the first book on ‘Coactions and Competition in Plants’ worldwide. It was translated from Czech language, because the English is read in most countries of the world, hence, the allelopathy scientists would be able to know the phenomenon of coactions and competition in plants. The allelopathic interactions in coactions and competition in higher plants greatly influences the productivity of field crops, fruits trees and forest trees in natural and managed ecosystems. In tropical and subtropical countries, many crops are grown in crop mixtures, owing to their several advantages. Likewise, in natural forests, many tree spp. Grow together, besides many herbs and shrubs grow underneath their canopy. Now due to increased human population, the farmers to meet the diverse requirements of their families, grows several crops with trees, called Agroforestry. However, little information is available about the allelopathic interactions in coactions and competition in the above agro-ecosystems. Worldwide, it is the only book available on these important aspects. This book consists of 8 Chapters viz., (i) Basic Principles, (ii) Competition, (iii) Secondary Compounds, (iv) Non-contact coactions, (v) Antagonistic contact coactions, (vi) Synergic contact coactions, (vii) Conclusions, (viii) References and Appendix. It is hoped, that this book will provide inspiration and in-depth knowledge of the coactions and competition in higher plants. This book will be very useful for the Researchers, Teachers and Students of Biosciences and Agricultural Sciences.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Barbara Polyticka
Barbara Politycka has been a scientific worker and a lecturer at Agricultural University of August Cieszkowski in Poznan, Poland, where since 1973 she has been conducting classes in plant physiology. Her major scientific interests constitute: allelopathy in soil sickness phenomenon and plant responses to phenolic compounds released from plant residues. She is the co-author of a monography and numerous works on allelopathy. In 2004 she was granted Life Time Achievements Award by International Allelopathy Foundation.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jana Kalinova
Dr. Jana Kalinova is Ph.D. (Plant Production) and working as Researcher in the Department of Plant Production, Faculty of Agriculture, University of South Bohemia, E. Budijovice, Czech Republic. Her major areas of research are production of buckwheat and millets and organic farming. Recently she has started research in allelopathy. She has participated in many project: (i) Productiona nd quality of alternative crops for healthy diet, (ii) Diversity of buckwheat (Fagopyrum sp.) genetic resources and its use in sustainable agriculture and healthy food production in Czech Republic and China, (iii) Collaborating with EU research on Ecological farming and (iv) Allelopathic potential of common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) with focus on phenolic compounds. She is author and co-author of 20 scientific papers, 45 contributions, 1 Monograph and 19 other papers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.S. Narwal
Prof. S.S. Narwal, s an Inernationally renowned allelopathy scientists. He is the first national fellow (Allelopathy) of Indian Council of Agricultural research, New Delhi from 1995-2005. Currently he is the President, Indian Society of Allelopahy and the Chief Editor, Allelopathy Journal. He is also founder of International Allelopathy Society (1994) during the II International Allelopathy Conference, New Delhi. He has authored/edited 15 books.
