Nepal, the Himalayan kingdom is rich in medicinal plant resources. Himalayan medicinal plants are very popular since the Vedic period. Details on all of these plants are still to be known. Although the plant morphology, distribution and medical uses are known but chemical aspects of these plants is still behind. An attempt has been done to include information on chemical aspects in this book. This book ‘A Hand Book of Medicinal Plants of Nepal’ includes 108 important medicinal plants occurring in Nepal. The enumeration of the plant is arranged alphabetically according to the scientific names. Every effort has been made to enlist all the reputable medicinal plants of Nepal with their local names. Illustration, description, uses and distribution map of each species are provided and an attempt has been made to include the chemical constituent of the Nepalese medicinal plants derived from secondary Sources, reference of which are also provided. An appendix of 500 medicinal plant species with local names is included and glossary of medical terms is provided. It is hoped that this book may be able to provide a lucid discourse on the subject to the person seeking a brief information on the topics.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Keshab R. Rajbhandari

Keshab R. Rajbhandari has been working as a Scientific Officer in the Department of Plant Resources, Kathmandu.  He joined this office in 1974.  he received Master degree of Science in botany from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, in 1972.  He was awarded Doctor of Science in plant taxonomy from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1989.  he had also served as an Assistant Lecturer in Central Department of Botany, Tribhuvan University, from 1973 to 1974.  he has widely traveled across Nepal in pursuit of plant research.  He has attended several national and international congresses, workshops, seminars, meetings and has authored many important research papers on plant science.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kuber Jung Malla

Kuber Jung Malla Kuber Jung Malla born in Rukum district of Nepal received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1970 from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He has worked as a Head master in Tribhuvan Janata Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Musikot, Rukum from 1971 - 1973. He is currently working in department of Plant Resources, Nepal as an Assistant Scientific Officer. He received a training on cultivation of medicinal plants from Tsukuba Medicinal Plant Research Station, Japan during 1988-1989 and has good skill of cultivation of medicinal plants. He has traveled many parts of his country for survey and research on medicinal plants. Photography of plants is his hobby.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shoji Yahara

Shoji Yahara received the Master degree in Pharmaceutical sciences in 1975 from Hiroshima University, Japan. He was awarded the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Pharmaceutical sciences in 1978 by Kyushu University, Japan. He was Post Doc. Fellow in Johns Hopkins University (Neurology), USA from 1978-1980. He is currently working as an Associate Professor in Environmental Safety center of Kumamoto University, Japan. He has professional experiences in Computational Molecular design (Phytochemistry & Pharmacognosy). He has traveled some parts of Nepal for survey & research on medicinal plants, and has authored many scientific papers on chemistry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Takashi Watanabe

Takashi Watanabe graduated in Pharmacy in 1983. He received the Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from Kitasato University, Tokyo in 1999. He also worked as a JOCV volunteer under JICA in Nepal in the field of medicinal plants from 1984-1987. He has traveled many parts of Nepal for the survey of medicinal plants. He authors several research papers in the field of medicinal plants. He is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Medicinal Plant Garden, School of Pharmaceutical sciences, Kitasto University. He also worked as an expert for ethno-botanical study in Amazon Agricultural Research Cooperation Project of Brazil in the CPATU Belem of Brazil from 1993 - 1995 under Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
