As a result they lived in harmony with their environment and had little impact on the planet as a whole. However in the last three million years, Homo sapiens have evolved. Unlike most lower life forms we alter uninhabitable or marginally habitable environments to better suit our needs. Consequently humans have made the entire planet their ecological habitat. In our efforts to maximize space however we have too often made decision that have irreparably altered many of our environments.

Many earth scientists are aware and are becoming increasingly more so that we are living at perhaps the most critical period in Earths history. The impact of the human race is so significant that if we do not change our ways Earth will suffer irreparable damage. Human population is increasing at an alarming rate many of our non renewable life sustaining and other natural resources will be depleted within two generations. Air water and land pollution is increasing and decisions on land use are being made strictly on economic and political grounds when they should have input from professional earth scientists.
