The history of British rule in India and its impact on modern-day life in this country is an important subject for all those interested in the history of India and also students preparing for careers in various administrative sectors. No doubt, much has been written on the subject but it has been widely dispersed. A seeker of information would have to spend considerable time searching for material, procuring it, and then searching for portions of interest to him. This two-volume set has attempted to resolve the problem by putting together as much relevant information as possible in a concise and sequential manner. The policy of the British towards the states and the building up of the British Army to enforce their rule have been dealt with in detail in the volumes. Both are important aspects of British rule in India and, in fact, are the cornerstones on which they consolidated their rule and maintained it for two centuries. Both these aspects of their policy formed part of the ‘Iron Hand’ with which they could subjugate the rulers and people of India. Students of history cannot ignore this aspect, the study of which is of prime importance to them as well as teachers, historians, politicians and the administrators who have not only to lay down a policy for good governance but also implement it. The past is always a good teacher and the ways and methods of how a small ‘nation of shopkeepers’ could rule such a vast country for such a long time would be an invaluable asset of knowledge.
