The bright star in the Indian manufacturing industry has been the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. It has consistently performed beyond expectations and is a net exporter of drugs. The future of the industry seems even brighter and contract research and manufacturing (CRAMS) is likely to dominate this industry. India is a major player in this sector and has stolen a big lead over its nearest competitor China and should be in a position to widen this lead further. The large number of FDA approved plants and also eGMP plants in India make it a hot favorite for any outsourcing in pharmaceutical and biotech sector. The tightening of the patent law and introduction of product patent from the earlier process patent should embolden more US and Western Europe companies to shift their R&D and manufacturing to India. The large talent pool in the Indian pharmaceutical and biotech industry with a huge number of PhDs, gives the Indian pharmaceutical and biotech industry a lot of advantage. India has become the leader in outsourcing in various sectors and CRAMS holds a lot of potential for Indian companies. This book has been brought out against this background and it attempts to discuss the various aspects of CRAMS. The concepts of CRAMS and individual country experiences are discussed here. In addition, profiles of some major CRAMS companies are given. A lot of countries are trying to enter CRAMS but the successful player is likely to be India, with China playing the catch up game. The book is likely to be useful to researchers, students and also companies interested in entering CRAMS. SMEs interested in being contract manufacturers or contract researchers will also find this book very useful.
