It is a known fact that iconometry is a much neglected area in India art historical research. It is mainly because it involves analysis of the data by statistics and computation. Such scientific techniques are beyond the reach of art historians. Goplala-krishnan is trained in all these disciplines and so was able to take up the challenge. Very few Indian scholars (Stall of the statistics department in the Madras Christian College), an American and a Japanese scholar have done research in the field. The present book is the only one available on early Pandyan iconometry. It compliments the research of another scholar of the above Department who have worked on the iconography of the early Pandyan cave temples. A normsetting, are in art historical research, its scientific results are commendanly. It gives life to the proposition that these is a school of Pandyan art, earlier proposed by Susan L. Huntigton.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S. Gopalakrishnan

Dr. S. Gopalakrishnan is Assistant University Librarian, Anna University, MIT, Chennai. He possesses Master’s Degree in Political Science, and Library Information Science and Doctorate in LIS and Diploma in System Analysis and Data Processing. He has more than two decades of professional experience. He has prepared course material for distance education in LIS for Madras, Annamalai and Alagappa Universities. He has published more than 100 papers in the journals, edited volumes & National and International Seminar proceedings. He has written three books on Computers entitled “Fundamentals of Computers”, “Computer Programming Made Simple”, and “Computer and Software”. He has brought out a CD-ROM product on LIS for UGC NET / SLET examination. He has been awarded the Best Paper Award in the National Seminar on New Public Library in the Information Age during 2003.
