Real development relates to all-round improvement of the self and the refinement of human perceptions. Education is the most vital instrument to achieve this objective. Meaningful education makes for self-development and consequently for the transformation of society as a whole. In the present age of struggle and strife, conflict and confrontation, education for development is the most relevant and necessary issue for contemplation and action for all nations. India, with the additional advantage of her rich cultural heritage, healthy traditions, fresh initiatives, and renewed political will, can play a major role in this task. The book contains original and analytical essays which highlight this hypothesis through an intensive examination of specific motifs, processes and strategies–such as the national policy on education, value education, teacher’s training, honouring teachers, physical education, elementary education, expansion versus consolidation, comprehension and communication skills, higher education, state councils for higher education, and distance education. A very perceptive study based on a life-long experience and deliberations of a top-level educational administrator, educationist and academician.
