Designed as an introductory text for the undergraduate first-year students of all branches of engineering, the present book covers the basics of civil engineering which is required by the students in the beginning of their four-year engineering studies.
This textbook covers four parts of civil engineering: Building materials, Building construction and architecture, Surveying, and Highway engineering. Bhargab Mohan Das, M.E., is a Senior Manager and Chairperson, RITTA Co. Ltd., Bangkok. Mr. Bhargab has conducted many construction surveys, while handling the projects of high rise buildings and flyovers in Bangkok, and an international airport in Doha.

MADAN MOHAN DAS, PhD (University of Strathclyde, UK), has been a Professor, Assam Engineering College, Guwahati. An Emeritus Fellow of AICTE and Director of Technical Education, Government of Assam, Dr. Das has about four decades of teaching experience. He has published/presented more than 55 research papers in national and internal journals and conferences. Dr. Das is the author of many books including Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachines, Open Channel Flow, Irrigation and Water Power Engineering, and Hydrology (published by PHI Learning, New Delhi, 2008).

MIMI DAS SAIKIA, PhD (IIT Guwahati), is an Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, Royal School of Engineering and Technology, Guwahati, Assam. She has been with the Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Silchar. With a decade of experience in teaching and research she has published many papers in different national and international journals. Her research interest includes hydraulics and open channel flow. Dr. Mimi Das Saikia has authored books including Irrigation and Water Power Engineering and Hydrology (published by PHI Learning, New Delhi, 2008).
