This handbook attempts to address the political and social learning needs of women in Panchayati Raj Institutions in India. It develops thematic gender-focused training modules on a range of subjects, including social mobilization and use of social capital formation for ushering development of a network of women PRIs at the grassroots level. The handbook adopts a Participatory Action Research approach involving the different stakeholder groups in praxis cycles for deepening and sustaining the impact of the capacity building interventions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Amitava Mukherjee

Dr. Amitava Mukherjee is the Executive Director, Development Track, New Delhi, a knowledge company and currently the Chief Technical Advisor (Pro-poor Public-Private Sector Partnership), with the United Natons Economic and Social Council for Asia and Pacific, Bangkok. He was earlier Professor of Economics and Planning, Lal Bahadur Shastri Natioinal Academy of Administration, Mussoorie and Consultant to various UN agencies and international organisations. He has written extensively on decentralization, poverty and hunger, with over thirty books and numerous papers to his credit.

D. Bandyopadhyay, IAS (Retd.), was the Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development and Secretary (Revenue), Ministry of Finance, Government of India; Executive Director, Asian Development Bank; and is presently connected in different senior capacities with various State and Central organizations, as also with civil society organisations.
