The Encyclopaedia of Women in South Asia is a detailed study of eight countries including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldive. Inhabited mostly in the rural areas, they had been the crippling handicaps of illiteracy, constant motherhood and poor health. This effected their self-confidence, limited their access to information and skills. However women’s legal and social status has changed throughout these countries political history on account of their own consistent effort. The theme has been weaved into eight comprehensive Chapters having deep bearing on historical background geography and people, social status of women, including their education and employment, discrimination against women, women’s role in government, the national policy, and women in politics. The Bibliography is attached at the end of each volume. These volumes are useful for women, social scientists, teachers and students, not only in these countries but also all over the world.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bachchan Kumar
Dr. Bachchan Kumar, M.A., Ph.D. and D.Litt (Magadh University, Bodh Gaya, Bihar); specialized in history, art, archaeology and culture of South and South East Asia. He is author of a book The Bhils: An Ethno-Historic Analysis and edited a monography Glimpses of Early Indo-Indonesian Culture: Collected Papers of Himansu Bhusan Sarkar. Presently, he is working at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Sangh Mittra
Dr. Sangh Mittra is Deputy Director (Research) in Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi, a National Institute of repute. Besides her academic responsibilities in the council, she is intensively involved in other academic activities. She is an eminent social scientist and author of more then three dozen books in History and Archaeology and several research in reputed research journal. She did her M.A., L.L.B, Ph.D. in Archaeology from University of Lucknow and is submitting her D. Litt. Work shortly. She has been presenting research papers in National and International seminars and member of International and national Institutions, societies and has academic links with numerous institutions of higher learning. She is honorary professor and director of B.R. Ambedkar Social Sciences Institute, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, U.P.
