In recent times environmental issues have emerged as one of the major concerns that beset humanity and especially the coming generations. Till only a few years ago environment was regarded in the literature on international relations as the stable backdrop which enabled state actors to enact their drama of conflict and cooperation. However the colossal environmental degradation that took place as a result of industrial style economic production and consumption as well as exponential population growth render such cosy assumptions redundant. Environmental issues began to figure in the international agenda since the early 1970s leading to both conflict and co-operation due to the transnational nature of ecological degradation. The present volume is an attempt to bring together contributions from both physical and social scientists to examine diverse facets of the impact of environmental issues on human security with special emphasis on sustainable development, climate change and implications for international relations. This study is essential reading for all those interested in understanding how environmental issues will shape the future of humanity in the 21 century.
