Stretching between the high Himalayan territory in the northern limit and the Bay of Bengal in the south, the present political boundary of the state of West Bengal enjoys a unique landmark from floristic point of view. It is the only state in India which for its geographical location is endowed with a flora ranging right from the most impressive littoral forest of the Sundarbans to the luxurient forests of the Himalayan foothills and the vegetation upwards culminating to the temperate and alpine zone in the district of Darjeeling.
