The book is an Account of Geography of Crime Assam (1975-2001). It is interestingly identifies various causation of crime in an area such as Assam The Brahmaputra Valley for the last three decades marched through a series of problems such as, influx of immigration in the post independent period and the emergence of Bangladesh gas created an explosive situation upsetting the demographic scenario of this valley. People of Assam are in the State of outnumber and swamp. Therefore, the inevitable reaction, an anti-foreigner’s drive started in 1979 has paralyzed the government and these immigration processes are continuing till date. This area has been seething with secessionism, insurgency etc. By United Liberation Font of Assam (ULFA), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB),  Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT), Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA), etc. and this has resulted in student unrest, group tension ethnic cleansing and economic stagnation. Turmoil bred a sense of alienation, deprivation and neglect have resulted in population problem and problem of unemployment has increased fear among the indigenous people for loosing their own socio-cultural identity. Despite of having huge potential and exploitable natural resources, the valley continues to be economically backward, consequently lack of job opportunity; lack of infrastructural development and so on which have worsened social relations and reflected economic stagnation. In due course of tine, the problem of crime and violence indicated an upward trend in  the Brahmaputra valley. The present book seeks to identify the problems of crime and tries to highlight the spatio-temporal of crime, trends and concentration of violent property, social and other traditional crimes in space and time with the help of maps in the valley from 1975 to 2001. It discusses relationship between geography and crime. Findings of the study are quite revealing and significant for the reduction of crime in the valley. Factors of occurrence of crime and some measure to reduce criminality in the society in a manageable level have also been explained.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kalidas Sarma

Dr. Kalidas Sarma received early schooling from Rowta, District Udalguri (BTAD), Assam. Thereafter he graduated with honours (Geography) from Union Christian College Barapani, Shillong. He did his Post Graduation and Ph.D. in Geography from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya. Currently he is serving as a Sr. Lecturer in Geography in Kharupetia College, Kharupetia, Darrang (Assam).
