Acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the leading infectious cause of adult death in the world. Untreated disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has a case fatality rate that approaches 100%. Not since the bubonic plague of the 14th century has a single pathogen wreaked such havoc. It is estimated that during the course of 2002 some 5 million people became infected with HIV, and almost 3 million people died of AIDS. This book reviews the current status of the HIV/AIDS epidemics, evaluates the approaches and strategies currently being used in each country, and makes suggestions for government and non-governmental organizations to planning effective programmes to control the pandemic.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A.P. Dixit

A.P. Dixit, (b. 1946) did his M.Sc. from University of Gorakhpur, Gorakhpur. He received his M.A. in Philosophy degree from University of Delhi, Delhi. He later did M.Ed. from University of Delhi, Delhi. He also received degree of Jyotishacharya from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Delhi. He joined Education Department of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi and later retired as Assistant Education Officer (AEO), MCD. He received award from Panjabi Academy, Delhi from promotion of Punjabi language. He has also been recipient of various prizes from MCD for Science Fairs and other organizations. Besides being an avid bibliophile, he has many interest and contributes papers and articles on various issues regularly.
