The success of a society depends to a great extent on the level of relationships between individuals who constitute that society. The art of human relationship is a great are and it determines the functioning of a social organization. There are those who say Plato is as right today as he was in his own day over 200 years ago. Perhaps you are one of these people. Can "common humanity" be educated according to an ideal that is different from what their society wants? Is it only by a "miraculous interposition" that those few characters escape and come to good," or are you among the "common humanity" who have been educated by the "greatest of all sophists" according to its desires? And where do you stand on these questions as they bear on your future role as a teacher? These are ancient questions, and they have an urgency about them today. Education has never been as widespread, as it is today, and probably has never been so widely questioned. And the questions are Plato’s: Must education for most young people by an indoctrinating (and thereby impersonal and alienating) experience? Can we hope for only a few at any time to escape this (by some micraculous intervention)? What do you think it would be like for you to be educated? What can we reasonably hope for in education?
