Human resources make the difference to societies and organizations. If two countries have roughly equal resources but different levels of development, the difference is accounted by its human resources. In a knowledge economy, scale and success are a function of the ability and attitude of people. The volume is useful in addressing some of the vital issues relating to international human resources, cross-cultural management and training and development leveraging the potential of information technology. The papers deals not merely with HRD issues concerning managers and professionals, but also the workers. It deals with the challenges for HRD arising out of globalisation, technology and competition. Some of the chapters specifically take stock of the current status of the profession, competency requirements, emerging challenges and future roles and future of HRD itself. Human Resource Development-Challenges and Opportunities is an effort in the direction of raising certain queries and concerns in the field, as a contribution towards enabling human resource development to become more accountable and integrated part of organizational life. The work is also directed at engaging in deeper meaningful debate to construct workable, effective and useful approaches, in an effort to strengthen the future of human resource development. It is hoped that his volume will serve to highlight a need for further paradigm exploration in the study of organizations and their management.
