This book gives an introduction to the concept of human rights and describes how human rights can be implemented in education. The Chapter I deals with human rights—its meaning; rights and duties; general conditions underlying the idea of human rights; theories of human rights. The section one of Chapter II gives a detailed description of international declarations and conventions, treaties, group rights and right to equality, personal and family rights and United Nations and human rights. In the introduction part of the second chapter, some of the commonly used terms in the declarations and conventions of human rights are explained. Section two deals with the right to development and the right to environment. Considering the importance of this chapter, a note on the important things to remember is also given. Section one of Chapter III gives a background of the human rights in Indian context and constitutional provisions of human rights. Section two gives the details of implementation of human rights in India. Agencies promoted human rights implementation in India are described in detail under this section. Chapter IV section one gives a wide coverage of human rights education-rationale, principles, framework of educational policies in India and human rights education in India with emphasis on human rights education at elementary level, human rights education at secondary level, human rights education at higher secondary level, co-curricular activities for human rights education and protection of human rights in schools. Section two deals with human rights education and training of teachers, objectives and specifications of human rights education, role of teacher educators in human rights education, problems faced by the teachers of human rights, human rights environment in schools and a detailed description of methods of teaching human rights. This book provides a framework to help students of human rights courses, teachers of human rights and prospective teachers, teacher educators and all others who are concerned with human rights education.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR C. Naseema

Dr. C. Naseema, M.Sc. (Physics), M.Ed., Ph.D. (Education), DDE, PGDHE, PGDCA is a Reader in Education of University of Calicut, Kerala. She is the Principal Investigator of U.G.C. aided major project on human Rights Education. Dr. Naseema has played a creative role in the development of a variety of curriculum materials. She has published two books, Methodology of Physical Sciences and Human Rights Education – Conceptual and Pedagogical Aspects and contributed to the books on Environmental Education – A Pedagogical Analysis, Year Book on Teacher Education and Globalisation and Challenges for Education. She has over 15 papers published in national and international journals.
