Summar monsoon rains constitute the greatest climatic resource of India. Yet in the years when there is an aberration in the monsoon rains, the arid, semi-arid or dry land areas of the country where any access to water is dependent only on local rainfall because of little or none technical infrastructures and low societal levels, get affected by “drought syndromesâ€. This book which seeks to update the literature regarding drought crisis management on other hand. It is hoped that the methodology provided in the book helps in working out drought indices for a drought-prone region so that the “enigma†of drought is solved and the response efforts in facing drought which got changed for the first time in the 1987 drought from a reactive crisis management approach to a more pro-active drought management, becomes more comprehensive so that the nation doesn’t have to worry about this natural disaster. It is hoped that this book will get a wide audience including students, research scholars, scientists, resource managers, environmental planners and decision makers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Saroj K Pal
Dr. Saroj K. Pal, a Professor in Physical Geography at University of Delhi, has been acclaimed as a leading specialist on physical and mathematical aspects of Geography in India as well as at abroad. A Direct disciple of Prof. S.P. chatterjee of Calcutta University, Prof. Pal who has been a recipient of Senior Fulbright Fellow, is a widely travelled person both in India and aborad. As a keen analyst of geographical events, Prof. Pal does not accept Geography to be a generalist, holistic subject for pedagogic treatment but tries to see it as a very positivist subject for reinventing it into a front-line discipline. in this respect he feels the need for single, authoritative volumes on important issues of Geography and that may be the reason that Prof. Pal who is having a book on Physical Geography of India from the point of view of regional earth science approach, has felt the need for writing the present book as the natural nemesis of his belief.
