Natural disasters such as earthquake, landslide, flood, drought, cyclone, volcanic eruptions, environmental degradation etc. are of global phenomenon. Most of the countries are experiencing either one or more disasters at regular interval. International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, of the UN resolution (1989) aims at minimizing the loss of life damage to property and disruption of economic and social activities through concerted actions. Dissemination of the existing and new technical information related to measures for the assessment, prediction and mitigation of natural disasters through awareness programs is one among the objectives. Landslides pose serious threat to human settlements and structures used for transportation, natural resources management and tourism. It imparts significant damages to property, highway, railways, waterways and pipelines. The slide events were reported to have triggered mainly by rainfall, earthquake and human activities. There is a need to understand the developments in the physical and atmospheric sciences, engineering, management and society and disaster medicine. The present work contains papers and compiled information that highlight various aspects of the landslide disaster and mitigation measures that are essential in planning for landslide preparedness. This volume is brought out with support of colleagues at CSRE, ISRO-IIT Space Technology Cell & Curriculum Development Program, IIT Bombay, whose aim is to disseminate knowledge and spread awareness about landslides. ABOUT THE AUTHOR R Nagarajan

Dr. R. Nagarajan is with Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He has significantly contributed in the application of remote sensing and GIS in natural disaster assessment, monitoring, natural disaster assessment, monitoring, natural resources and environment, water stress, demand and supply, etc. for the past 30 years. He s actively pursuing his activities on the identification of drought vulnerable areas, indicators and short and long-term preparedness. He has completed several research projects and has contributed articles in national and international journals.
