Biology, the science of life, is concerned with the characteristics and behaviour of organism, how species and individuals came into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and in their environment. It encompasses a broad spectrum of academic fields that are often viewed as independent disciplines. Teaching of biology aims to give students such knowledge and values as lead to respect for all living things; enable them to understand the evolutionary processes underlying the multiplicity and variety of organisms; and awaken them to ethical issues related to areas where biological science is applied. Students are to learn the independent planning and execution, both in the laboratory and in the field of investigation and analyses involving the collection, manipulation and interpretation of measurable data and observations. During the last three decades epoch making changes have taken place in the discipline of biology and it is genuine that these developments are reflected in the methods of teaching biology. So the methods of teaching biology should keep pace with the advancement in biological science. This book discusses various aspects of learning and teaching of biology. It is designed on the basis of UNESCO ICT initiatives for students who wish to learn and teach biology effectively. It is hoped that the book will fulfil their needs in an appropriate manner.
